RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT THROUGH 6 PM FRIDAY FOR ALL OF SOUTHERN OREGON AND NORTHERN CALIFORNIA EXCEPT FOR THE IMMEDIATE COASTAL ZONE AREAS. THIS DOES INCLUDE ALL THE VALLEY LOCATIONS OF SOUTHWEST OREGON. The National Weather Service Office in Medford, Oregon has issued a Red Flag Warning due to expected thunderstorm development that will begin in the early morning hours and then peak by Friday afternoon. Frequent lightning strikes are expected on dry fuels, leading to an increased risk of new fire starts. Additionally, some storms may have gusty winds that could drive rapid spread of fires. On the positive side, rains are expected in the core of storms and this should help diminish fire activity or even quench new starts limiting the overall number of new fire starts. This warning is unusual in that it encompasses such a wide area, but aerial coverage of storms is expected to be widespread. The coastal zones are also expected to see the chance for thunderstorms, but fuels are not nearly as dry on the western foothills of the Coast Range so the warning does not extend to those areas.
