REFLECTION: Today I witnessed a taxi driver treat an elderly lady with dementia so mean that it made me cry. He was charging this person $40 for a cab ride and she only lived five minutes from where she had to go. She was confused, crying, had no money and couldnt remember her childrens names or numbers. I interjected on the ladys behalf and he started screaming at me. I told him he is not going to charge the lady $40 for a taxi ride that should have been no more than $10. He threatened to call the police on the lady and me. I told him go ahead, clearly he would have looked like the jerk. I asked him what will he accept and he said $30. I told him no way, $20 is the max youll get. Long story short, he left with $20, and refused to take the lady back home. That was not a problem because I was not going to allow her to leave with him anyway. What made me cry was not that he screamed at me in front of a lot of people, but I couldnt believe what I was witnessing. He had no compassion for this sweet lady who was so confused and crying like a five year old child. She thought she was going to get in trouble with the police. She was so helpless that it broke my heart, and all he did was scream at her for his money. I stepped away because I refused to let him see me be reduced to tears, and it was NOT about him, only this poor lady. I really wish this world had more compassion for our most vulnerable people, the children and elderly. #ImSadForOurFuture
