REFLECTIONS ON THE ONGOING UPRISINGS IN THAILAND AND UKRAINE: LESSONS FOR NIGERIA. There is no doubt that the growing incidences of mass protests against state power which came into prominence following the Arabs Springs and now spreading to other countries of the world is a notable challenge for emerging western style democracy. Since military rule has become unpopular while liberal democracy is now considered to be a norm and the standard for admitting world leaders in to comity of nations, popular uprisings or mass protests have also become the order of the day instead of military coups. What this implies especially for the less advanced democratic societies like Nigeria is that, the institutions of political change such as political parties, mass media, intelligentsia etc, have proved to be ineffective. These uprisings point to the fact that the DESIRED CHANGE by citizens of the above mentioned countries which in my opinion, shared the same feelings of political apathy with majority of Nigerians, will hardly come from the political class but rather the masses that bear the burden of poverty, unemployment, insecurity, injustice, marginalization, among others...NIGERIANS MUST RISE UP TO DEFEND THEIR RIGHTS KNOWING THAT THE RIGHT TO OBEY ALSO IMPLIES THE RIGHT TO DISOBEY UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS ( Thanks to Revolutionary Theorists)
