REFRAMING or LOOKING AT THINGS FROM A DIFFERENT ANGLE. David: If there is one thing that I have learned from the time I have been associated with Anne and her OCD Project it is this - fighting OCD involves engaging it on many fronts often simultaneously. It can be a fearsome aggressor and you need a well stocked arsenal of approaches, as well as a good support group such as we have here. Sometimes as you go eyeball-to-eyeball with your OCD just stepping to one side can open up a fresh perspective. A different way of approaching the same problem. For example, considers the difference between AMAZE and A MAZE: A MAZE is an intricate, usually confusing, network of interconnecting pathways as in a dark labyrinth. Whereas to AMAZE is astonishing, it is to be positively moved emotionally by something wonderful or extraordinary. The difference between the dark place and the sense of wonder? The difference between the two is a space, just a pause. . . . So why not try this for yourself today. Before you do what you have always done when faced by the OCD-induced anxiety - stop yourself and insert a conscious pause. Take a deep breath or two (or more), and sidestep. Consciously try to look at it differently this time. You might surprise yourself and be AMAZED by the result.
