::: REFS PUT PLAYERS ON NOTICE AFTER 56 WEEK BAN ::: In a move that signals Rugby referees are no longer going to tolerate abuse of any kind, the ACT Rugby judiciary confirmed yesterday afternoon that it has enacted an IRB-recommended sanction and banned a Canberra player for 56 weeks after an incident during a 4th Grade game between ACT Wests and Queanbeyan. The ban was enforced after the Wests player reacted to being shown a yellow for an earlier infraction by wiping blood on the match referee, ACT Rugby Referees Association President Robert Boyes. The player was then issued a red card and as he was leaving the field, he allegedly king-hit an unsuspecting Queanbeyan player, breaking his nose. The player received eight weeks for the punch and 48 weeks for the blood incident. However he could have faced suspension for up to 96 weeks or a life ban if the offence was deemed at the worst end of the scale of referee abuse. It follows an incident recently in the NSW competition when a senior club official from a NSW Premiership side ran onto the field at the end of a 1st XV match, physically and verbally accosting touch judge Matt Kellahan while the clubs players and supporters hurled verbal abuse at him. The club official later stood down from the board of his club and both he and the club involved made a public apology to the referees. The NSW judiciary recently heard his case and the club is still investigating the incident and have indicated they may still take further action. Said Boyles about the ACT incident, Hopefully they (the judiciary) make a statement that you cant touch referees in any code. Hopefully they take a stand for the sake of referees. My opinion is a referee or umpire... they shouldnt be touched. It doesnt belong anywhere, even verbal abuse. He went on to add, Treat referees with respect. We dont get paid for this job, we do it because we love the game and want to be a part of it just like the players do. To read more about the ACT judiciaries tough stance click on the link below.
