REGIONAL COUNCIL APPROVES BI-WEEKLY CART-BASED WASTE COLLECTION LAUNCH DATE BRAMPTON, ON. (June 27, 2013) – On Thursday, June 27, Peel Regional Council approved the Region’s program launch date for bi-weekly cart-based waste collection. The approval follows Regional Council’s Thursday, April 11, endorsement of plans to introduce a Region-wide, bi-weekly cart-based waste collection program. Residents in the cities of Brampton, Mississauga and the Town of Caledon will move to bi-weekly cart-based waste collection which will provide every-other-week alternating garbage and recycling (blue box) collection and weekly organics (green bin) collection. Caledon residents will move to bi-weekly cart-based waste collection in October 2015, with Brampton and Mississauga residents to follow in October 2016 with the start of new waste collection contracts. “It is generally accepted in the waste management industry that bi-weekly garbage collection supports increased diversion efforts by residents,” remarked Norm Lee, Director of Waste Management for the Region of Peel. The Region of Peel is committed to responsibly managing garbage collection, and the Green Bin and Blue Box Programs, while overseeing costs and growing community needs. The Region-wide program change to bi-weekly cart-based waste collection will increase diversion, reduce greenhouse gases and lower operational costs while maintaining quality customer service. The Region of Peel provides waste management services in the Cities of Brampton and Mississauga and in the Town of Caledon.
