REGIONS CANCER HOSPITAL SAYS THANK YOU FOR YOUR STARRY SUPPORT The dedicated charity for the regions only cancer hospital has raised a record amount for its Christmas Star Appeal thanks to the generosity of its supporters. In a bid to keep more families together for many Christmases to come, Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity asked for donations over the festive season to ensure that the vital services provided by the hospital can continue to be improved. With over 700 donations the cancer charity were overwhelmed by the support of the community and corporate organisations who gave to the appeal in return for their very own Silver Star decorations. The appeal, which has been generously sponsored by Napoleons Casino, asked people to remember the vital work of Weston Park Hospital this Christmas and has so far raised over an outstanding £30,000. Weston Park Hospital is one of only four specialist cancer hospitals in England and treats patients from all over South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire. Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity is the only dedicated charity for the hospital and exists to support the world-class cancer research and to improve the treatment and care for people living with cancer. Along with donations to the Christmas Star Appeal, supporters of the charity submitted ‘Star Selfie’ pictures to the cancer charity as a further show of support for the hospital. Patrons, patients, staff, fundraisers and even pets, joined in the ‘Star Selfie’ initiative to help keep Weston Park Hospital at the forefront of research, treatment and care. The money raised from the appeal will enable the continued funding of vital projects in the hospital plus the funding of new research trials, treatment options and after care facilities such as the Cancer Support Centre. Charity Patron and former Taekwondo Olympian, Sarah Stevenson submitted her very own ‘Star Selfie’ after losing both her mum and dad to cancer in 2011. Sarah said, “I wanted to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity this Christmas to say thank you for looking after my dad in his final months. The staff at Weston Park Hospital were truly incredible and anything I can do to help raise money for this vital facility is an absolute honour.” “I’ll be hanging my silver tree decoration with pride over the festive season in memory of my parents but also in hope of a brighter future for those fighting cancer right now in our region.” Charity Ambassador and undefeated boxer, Adam Etches showed his support for the appeal along with 22 year old Worksop patient, Liam Buckley. Liam, who was diagnosed with bowel cancer which has spread to his liver and lungs, is currently receiving treatment on the hospitals dedicated teenage unit. Liam said, “It was a no brainer for me to support Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity this Christmas. I’ve been receiving treatment at the hospital for the last few months and without a doubt they have helped brighten up my days there. “The cancer charity provides funding for the teenage unit at the hospital and it made such a difference to be treated in such a modern and friendly environment surrounded by patients of a similar age to me.” “I would urge anyone who is able to, to make a donation to the charity’s Christmas Star Appeal and submit a Star Selfie at the same time- it’s not only festive and fun but it helps raise awareness of this incredible facility.” The charity is encouraging those of you who would like to support the hospital this Christmas to continue sending in donations over the Christmas period. Fundraising Manager, Helen gentle said, “We have been overwhelmed with the support we’ve received for our Christmas Star Appeal this year.” “We know that Christmas can be a financial strain for families across the region which is why we’re incredibly grateful to the hundreds of people who have chosen to remember our vital work. Every donation we receive makes a huge difference to those receiving treatment at Weston Park Hospital.” “Whether it’s in memory of a loved one or in the hope of a brighter future let’s continue to shine bright this Christmas for cancer patients who may be facing the reality of spending time in hospital over the next few weeks.” Donations to the appeal can be made via post, online at Christmasstarappeal.org.uk or by texting WPCC14 followed by the amount you would like to donate (£1, £3, £5 or £10) to 70070.
