The prepaid electricity meters are similar to prepaid mobile card facility, where consumers can buy certain units of power by making advance payment. MSEDCL authorities on Monday said the plan for installing pre-paid electricity meters has already been launched in the state. In Kothrud division, 27 pre-paid meters have been installed. In the first phase, as many as 6,000 meters will be made available for Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, the authorities said. Priority would be given for installation of the meters in apartments, the authorities said. The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) has issued permission to the MSEDCL to install 25,000 prepaid meters in the state on an experimental basis. The prepaid meter will be available at a cost of Rs 2,600, an official release said. Consumers, opting for the pre-paid meters will be given 5% concession in electricity bill. The meter will be provided with special accessories, the MSEDCL has stated. The bill will be calculated on the basis of the power charges approved by the MERC. With every meter, the consumer will get a consumer interface unit by which the consumer will be able to get the details about electricity consumption, the amount that has been pre-paid, the number of electricity units utilised and the balance amount. The unit will also give a prior notice to the consumer about recharging the meter. With this unit, consumers will be able to use electricity only when required by which they can make some financial savings. This would also save electricity, the MSEDCL stated. According to the power company, power supply will not be disconnected at odd hours at night, or on national holidays if the meter has not been recharged. However, the meter has to be recharged immediately on the next working day. There is also no time restriction within which the power units have to be used. The meters can be recharged online on the MSEDCLs official website. The facility for recharging will soon be made available at divisional offices of the MSEDCL. The Pune zone of the MSEDCL had kick-started the prepaid meter plan in April by installing 30 prepaid meters at commercial establishments in Lonavla.
