RELUCTANT BILL TOPPERS On this day in 1974, Jonathan Kelly’s - TopicsExpress

RELUCTANT BILL TOPPERS On this day in 1974, Jonathan Kelly’s Outside played Welwyn Garden City. Our supporting act was the legendary Tim Hardin. We were faintly embarrassed. Putting the man who wrote “If I Was a Carpenter”, “Don’t Make Promises”, “Reason to Believe” and “Hang on to a Dream” in a supporting role to US felt wholly wrong. And we were embarrassed for another reason; Tim was embarrassing! As soulful as his voice and guitar playing were, his long-time heroin dependency had obviously taken its toll and his awkward, uncoordinated and entirely unnecessary attempts at showmanship were not easy to watch. Even his own band looked uncomfortable. It was desperately sad to witness such a talent in such a condition. Tim Hardin tried but could never quite shake the heroin addiction that began whilst serving with the US Marine Corps in Vietnam, and an overdose killed him seven years later - just a few days after his 39th birthday. He’s still one of my favourite voices. https://youtube/watch?v=Z3_7rwD7RXY
