REMARKS FROM H.E. VICE-MINISTER FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND COOPERATION DR. CONSTÂNCIO PINTO AT THE LAUNCH OF NEW ZEALAND’S UNITED NATIONS HANDBOOK 2014-2015 16th October 2014 Excellencies Members of Government United Nations Country Representative Excellency Ambassador of New Zealand/Aotearoa Members of the Diplomatic Corps Directors of Government Ministries Staff of the New Zealand Embassy Representatives of Local and International Non-Governmental Organizations Representatives of Media Members of the New Zealand Community Distinguished Guests Ladies and Gentlemen It is a great honor for me to be invited to the launch of New Zealand’s United Nations Handbook 2014-2015. I would like to say a particularly warm thank you to H.E. Ambassador Jonathan Schwass for asking me to join with him in launching what can only be described as a gem of a guide. I single out Ann Howarth, wife of the Ambassador and editor of the book for the Trojan work she has done in making this book such a fine publication. New Zealand’s 2014-2015 United Nation Handbook is a must for those wishing to understand how the UN system works and avoid the painstaking work of unguided research. This book outlines in detail the operations of each UN body, those individuals who implement operations and crucially the member nations of the UN. The publication also provides a readymade reference and roadmap, particularly for small nations like Timor-Leste, to navigate around a complicated system of member states, procedures, voting records, and UN agencies. In this age of digital technological information, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand is to congratulated for ensuring that United Nations Handbook 2014-2015is also available as a Smartfone application. I know that many of our Foreign Service officers, both in Dili and abroad will benefit handsomely from having a copy of the reference book on their desks or in their computers. I dare say that Timor-Leste diplomats will not be the only diplomats and officials, as this handbook will undoubtedly be accessed by many government departments, diplomatic missions and others. Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen In being part of this launch, I am delighted to further enhance the excellent relations between our two nations. I know that over the coming years this bilateral relationship will develop for the benefit out our two nations. Finally, I would like to inform you that although the work was carried out at the New Zealand Embassy, the Embassy is located in Motael, and with due deference to Ann Howarth, I have asked my logistics department to buy 25 ink pads and stamps and stamp each handbook with the words ‘Guaranteed Timorese’. Thank you.
