REMEMBERING THE USS LIBERTY On June 8th, 1965, during the Six-Day War, Israel attacked and nearly sank the USS Liberty belonging to its closest ally, the USA. Thirty-four American servicemen were deliberately killed and over 170 wounded in the two-hour assault by Israeli warplanes and torpedo boats. For 43 years the survivors of the USS Liberty - sworn under oath - were forbidden to tell their stories. But today the surviving crewmen take heart and talk candidly about the massacre on the Liberty, and every year they gather at the Arlington National Cemetery for the somber memorial service. The survivors say it was a clear sunny day, the huge american flag has been flattering visibly in the wind, and big part of the crew was relaxing on deck taking sun. Israeli jet fighter planes were cruising a while over the USS Liberty, before they started to fire with rockets, napalm and board-guns for two hours, ripping to shreds third part of the crew. Three Israeli torpedo boats were firing five torpedoes on the USS Liberty, from which one did hit the ship, and took it under fire with machine-guns, particularly targeting on the communication device, and any crew-member showing up on board. The lifeboats which had been launched were systematically perforated by machine gun fire, so that the order of leaving the ship had to be rescinded. Dwight Porter, former US-ambassador in Lebanon, saw the communication notes between the Israeli Pilots with the ground-control, but demanded that these informations not to become public during his live time, because of subjected to umtost secrecy. Now after his death Porters recordings were revealed: An Israeli pilot had protested saying But it is an american ship - I can see it´s flag !, the ground-control answered: Dont bother about, attack! The aim of Israel was, to make the US believe Egypt has conducted the massacre, in order to involve the US in it´s own war. The USS Liberty was supposed to be destroyed and sunk without any survivors. At first moment it worked out, the US had sent a nuclear-wappened air-fighter towards Egypt to wipe out Cairo, with it´s then 6 million people. Israel had done it´s best to kill every single soul on the ship to avoid witnesses - but some survived - so the US became aware about the truth at the very last moment. Nucing Cairo was called off only 3 minutes before the nuclear bomb drops. But in THAT case Lyndon B. Johnson said: Just some boys lost, we will not embarrass our ally, Israel.” ... The survivors of the massacre on the USS Liberty, and the families of the victims since so many years are demanding any reaction whatsoever from the american government, and how Israel could get away with the slaughter of their sons and the crew members.
