REMEMBRANCE was the theme at the headquarters of 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron as a new memorial garden was opened at RAF Wittering on Thursday 6th November. In the midst of a busy Royal Air Force Station, a small corner has been set aside to remember those from 2 Mechanical Squadron who have given their lives in the performance of their duty. Designed and built by Senior Aircraftman Dean McAulay, and Senior Aircraftman Paul Crawley, and funded by the RAF Wittering Servicemen’s Independence Fund (SIF), the garden echoes the history of this special military unit. SAC McAulay said; “We wanted to do something nice, but we also thought about making something that 2MT could all share and enjoy. The Squadron’s been very supportive, and the SIF has been fantastic.” The idea was the brainchild of SAC Crawley, who approached SAC McAulay in January with his idea for a memorial garden. Detachments meant that the plan was put on hold for some months, but the funding arrived in July and building work began in the same month. The garden is immaculately finished with beautifully laid decking and a suitably restrained selection of tasteful plants and ornaments. Two benches, each with a small commemorative plate, provide a comfortable place to sit. A short service of dedication was held outside the main foyer of 2 MT Sqn’s headquarters building. RAF Wittering chaplain, Reverend Squadron Leader Ian Brown officiated, with over 50 squadron members in attendance. Squadron Leader Nick White, officer commanding 2 MT Squadron said; “I think the lads have done very well, and they’ve been properly supported by the Squadron throughout the project. As a result, the garden is a fitting and tasteful memorial.” 2MT’s garden of remembrance will remain tended and well cared for; the Squadron has an admirable selection of willing volunteers who are resolved to keep it in good order. Group Captain Damian Alexander is Station Commander at RAF Wittering, home of 2 MT Squadron. He said; “It is right and proper that RAF personnel remember their fallen comrades, and it is equally appropriate that they should create an environment in which this can take place.”
