REMINDER: Slots still available. If you run a NY metro group, please SHARE. Thank you in advance! REGION: NY/NJ METRO AREA Title of Study: Preliminary Experience with Dance/MovementTherapy in Patients with Endometriosis Principal Investigator: Elizabeth Zelesny ***Contact Information: [email protected]*** Criteria: Surgically Confirmed Endometriosis. Interested parties MUST contact the Principal Investigator directly for information, consent and participation. The ERC is not collecting respondent data. Thank you. As a Dance/Movement Therapy graduate student at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, Ms. Zelesny is writing her Thesis on the use of dance/movement therapy as an alternative therapy for women diagnosed with endometriosis. As a woman living with endometriosis, she is extremely interested in studying this topic. Please contact Ms. Zelesny directly at the email address above to obtain more information and to provide your consent should you qualify for participation. The Principal Investigator will provide you with detailed information so that you can understand the possible risks and benefits of participating in this study and decide whether or not you would like to be a part of it. Before deciding whether to participate in this study, you will be given the opportunity to read more information and ask questions regarding this study. Once the study has been explained and you have had all of your questions answered to your satisfaction, you will be asked to sign an Informed Consent form in order to participate. Why are you invited to participate in this study? You are being asked to take part in this study because you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, and have the opportunity to participate in dance/movement therapy sessions.Research studies include only people who choose to take part. Remember that your participation is completely voluntary. There is no penalty if you decide not to take part in this study or decide later that you want to stop participating in this research study. What is the purpose of this study? The purpose of this study is to look at how dance/movement therapy affects women diagnosed with endometriosis in regards to body image andpain. Is dance/movement therapy helpful? How is it helpful? The researcher hopes to answer these questions. What will you be asked to do? Upon your consent to enroll in this study, you will be asked to complete a pre and post workshop self-reports. Participants would fill-out the Serlin Kinaesthetic Imagery Profile (SKIP) scale. The SKIP scale is based on the use of Laban Movement Analysis (LMA). LMA is a notation system developed by Rudolf von Laban and his students. It is a movement theory system, which was used to notate a baseline body image profile and changes for this baseline overtime. In addition, participants will be asked to keep a journal about their experience with DMT with regards to body image and pain. Participants will be asked to journal about any changes in your body image and pain that occur while in the study. Journal entries will be coded (which means writing will be turned into numerical data) so the participants’ exact writing/words will not be identifiable or participants won’t be identified. Each survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes of your time to complete. During this study, you will be invited to participate in movement therapy sessions with the Investigator once a week. Each session will be one hour in length. According to the American Dance Therapy Association, dance/movement therapy is defined as “the psychotherapeutic use of movement to further the emotional, cognitive, physical and social integration of the individual” (ADTA.org). You may attend as much or as little as you wish. How long will you be in the study? The study will run for 8 weeks. If, for some reason, the Investigator does not receive your completed surveys, your data will not be used in the final research. You may withdraw from the study at any time without any sort of penalty. What are the possible risks of the study? Should you choose to participate in dance/movement therapy, the possible risks of this study are no more than those associated with mild,low-impact exercise. If you are experiencing any physical or emotional discomfort prior to the beginning of a session, please inform the Investigator so that she can keep you as comfortable as possible. Are there any benefits in participating in this study? There may be no direct benefit to you for participating inthis study. However, there is no current research concerning the use of dance/movement therapy with women diagnosed with endometriosis. The results of this study may help medical professionals to determine whether it would be good to provide dance/movement therapy services to women with endometriosis. How will my information remain confidential? Records of participation in this research study will be maintained and kept confidential as required by law. The surveys will not include your name, but rather a code number. The Investigator will be the only person able to access your survey information. These surveys will be stored in a secure, locked location. Your identity will not be revealed on any report or publication. What are the costs of your participation in this study? There is no cost for participating in this study. There is no compensation provided for participating in this study.
