Oswald Chambers wisely reminds us that “discernment is God’s call to intercession, never to fault-finding.” God often gives insights through prayer that are given only to guide us in praying. It is easy for such discernment to lead to judgement or even to gossip. A group that prays together regularly will become a safe place where deep sharing takes place. Any information shared in the group should remain there and should not be shared with others outside the group (without the express permission of the group member). This information is given for the purpose of intercession only. A prayer group should be a safe place. It should be a place where we can openly share our hearts and concerns. It should be a place where it is “O.K. for us not to be O.K.” Breaking confidences by taking information shared or discerned in prayer outside that group can destroy a prayer gathering. Intercession is strengthened by specificity and that often comes from having a safe place where people are able to share freely and safely. When we aren’t careful about keeping confidences, we take away from the joy of having a safe place to pray. But having a group where we can share freely, and that prays powerfully with discernment brings joy. Being careful not to disclose confidences, keeps our group safe and ensures that there is always joy in the house of prayer.
