REMINDERS ON PROPAGANDAS/CONSPIRACY THEORIES/ RUMORS/SCANDAL MONGERING Woe to every rumor monger and backbiter. (Quran 104:1) The Prophet salAllaahu ‘alayhi wa salllam said “shall I tell you what Nameemah is, it rumor mongering circulating among people” (Muslim) “The namaam (Rumor monger) will not enter Jannah ”(Bukhari and Muslim) The Prophet salAllaahu ‘alayhi wa salllam the Messenger of Allah passed by two graves and said:“The inhabitants of are being punished for major sins; one of them used to engage in (Nameemah) ...” (Al-Bukhari) The Prophet salAllaahu ‘alayhi wa salllam. On the night that I was taken, I saw a set of people who were had long finger nail made of copper and were using it to peeling off the flesh of their own faces and chest . When I asked Jibreel about them, he said: ‘these are people who used to engage in backbiting and slander (rumors, scandal) mongering’.” [Ahmad, Ibn Abee Ad-Duniyaa, Abu Dawood] O you who believe! Avoid much suspicion, indeed some suspicions are sins. (Qur’an 49:12) Behold, you propagate it with your tongues and said out with your mouth things you had no knowledge of and you though it to be a light matter while it was most serious in the sight of Allah (Qur’an 24: 15) Do not pursue what you have no knowledge of. Hearing, sight and hearts will all be questioned. (Qur’an 17: 36) Since they (the slanderers) have not produced witnesses! Then with Allâh they are the liars.( Quran 24:13) O you who believe! If a rebellious evil person comes to you with a news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful to what you have done. (Quran 49:6) “And obey not any swearer, a worthless liar, a slanderer that goes about scandal-mongering, hinderer of good, transgressor,...” (Quran 68:10-12) When there comes to them some matter relating to (public) safety or fear, they make spread it (among the people), if only they had referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have understood it from them (directly). Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allâh upon you, you would have followed Shaitân (Satan), save a few of you. (Qur’an 4:83) Umar radiyallahu anha said “ A word at the time of fitna is as devastating as a sword The believer reserve judgment until the matter is proven (Hasan Basri) Al- mugheerah ibn su’bah narrated that the prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam said “Allaah has forbidden you to disobey your mother, bury your daughters alive, denying the rights of others and to beg from the people. And He dislike Qila wa Qal, asking too many questions and spending extravagantly” (Bukhari) Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said about Qil wa Qal “It refers to wanting to pass on what people say and looking for that in order tell others of it , so that one can say “ so and so said such and such and such and such was said” Hafs ibn Aasim narrated that the prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam said “It is enough lying for a man to speak about everything that he hears (Muslim) Abu Hurayrah narrated that the prophet salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam said “It is enough sin for a man to speak about everything that he hears (Al-Silsilah as-Saheeah Abu Mas’ud said “ I heard the Messenger of Allah salallahu ‘alayhi wa salam say “ How bad is it for a man to keep saying “they say……” (Al-Silsilah as-Saheeah) O you who believe! Stand out firmly for Allâh and be just witnesses and let not the enmity and hatred of others make you avoid justice. Be just: that is nearer to piety, and fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is Well-Acquainted with what you do. (Qur’an 5;8) O you who believe! Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allâh, even though it be against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, be he rich or poor, Allâh is a Better Protector to both. So follow not the lusts (of your hearts), lest you may avoid justice, and if you distort your witness or refuse to give it, verily, Allâh is Ever Well¬Acquainted with what you do.(Qur’an 4: 135) May Allaah forgive us all for all the rumors we have engaged in. May He grant us to the ability to restrain ourselves form indulging further in this evil and unjust habit of rumor mongering/ slander/propaganda
