REPUBLIC DAY MESSAGE OF THE GOVERNOR The Governor of Nagaland, Dr. Ashwani Kumar, extends his greetings and best wishes to the people of the State, on the occasion of the 65th Republic Day, 2014. He reminded the people, that it was on 26th January 1950, that the Constitution of India was adopted, to secure to all its citizens ‘Justice, social, economics & political; Liberty of thought, expression & worship; Equality of status and opportunity; and promote fraternity, dignity & integrity’, and called for retrospection over the achievements of these ideals. The Governor reminded the people that all the States under the Sovereign, Democratic, Republic of India, play equal roles, enjoy similar powers and have the same responsibilities. However, the State of Nagaland has been accorded special position in the Constitution, by giving additional responsibility on matters of culture, religion and social practices, customary laws and ownership of land and its resources, he said. The Governor appealed to the people, to move towards progress by adapting to the universal law of change in nature. He therefore expressed optimism, that the people would change and evolve policies and practices. He appreciated the tremendous progress the State has already attained in Education, Agriculture, Horticulture, Health etc and in the adoptions to religious changes and in the democratization of institutions. He also commended the preservations of traditional arts & culture and customs. The Governor, urged for rapid growth in industrialization and agro-economy; infrastructure developments in roads, water and electricity; skill devolutions in the youth towards livelihoods and towards generation of employment opportunities. He gave a clarion call to the people of Nagaland for realization of existing policies and plans, for review of practices and regulations on land use, ownership and transfers, for recodification of customary laws on civil and criminal justice. The Governor wished the people with optimism that the State would move towards modernity through ‘Modern Townships’ with the Foothill Road facilitating a ‘Special Development Zone’.
