RESCUE AT RAINBOW BRIDGE. It was a bright sunny day at the Rainbow Bridge when an elderly dog came into view, his head hanging low, so very low, and his tail dragging. He approached slowly, and was obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Like all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, the dog was restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again, but still he seemed out of place, somehow. He trotted confidently toward the Bridge, then paused thoughtfully. He conferred briefly with a Siamese; they whispered, then the dog wagged his tail and trotted off toward a group of animals under a nearby tree. A macaw fluttered down and settled next to the Siamese. Yknow, I see that group over there all the time…they dont seem to mix much with the rest of us. And now that newcomer has gone to join them. Whats their story? The Siamese replied, You see, that poor animal over there - with the others - they are rescues. He was turned in to a rescue just as you saw him arrive, an older animal with his fur graying and his eyes clouding. Sadly, he never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. None of them had a family to give their love to, or to accompany across the Bridge. The Macaw considered this. So why dont they just cross on over, if they have no one to wait for? The cat smiled enigmatically. Oh, I didnt say they had no one to wait for. Who then? Suddenly a breeze stirred the air around them. A single person was approaching the Bridge and, as he neared, the rescued animals were bathed in a golden light… Him, grinned the cat, Watch A second group of animals gathered along pathway and bowed their heads as the person approached. At each bowed head, he offered a pat on their head or scratch behind the ears. The rescued animals swirled around the man in a rapturous mob of barking and purring! He laughed as they leaped onto his shoulders and into his arms, while a determined puppy wriggled into his coat pocket and a budgie landed on his hat. He hugged all he could hold, and together they all crossed the Bridge and disappeared from view. What just happened? asked the macaw. That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of all his work. They will all cross over when their new families arrive. Those who went with him were the ones who never found homes. But they know that rescuers love them as family and labor tirelessly to help them, so they wait here with us until one arrives, and form an honor guard to escort them over. I think I like rescuers, mused the bird. So does God, my friend, nodded the cat… So does God...
