RESEARCH has shown that younger people on a Northumberland island are shunning their native dialect. It seems that Lindisfarne has reached a cliff edge and that new generations are no longer learning their traditional tongue. Thats one of the findings of Dr Warren Maguire, Lecturer in Linguistics and English Language at Edinburgh University, who has been investigating the unique dialect of Holy Island with the help of recordings made in the 1970s and his own conversations with the people who live there. Dr Maguire spoke about his work today when he delivered the 16th annual Roland Bibby Memorial Lecture at Morpeth Town Hall. The event is organised by the Northumbrian Language Society in honour of its founding chairman.
