RESILIENT BRAINTREE WIN AT FGR Mensah and Holman combine - to share the goals and secure the points Braintree Town continued their frenetic series of games with a two-goal victory at Forest Green Rovers on Thursday evening. While Iron were on the defensive for the majority of the game, they always looked threatening on the counter-attack and took the lead on 36 minutes. Bernard Mensah broke free of the home defence on the right and, having slipped the ball past the on-coming Rovers keeper Sam Russell was then up-ended by the home custodian who conceded a penalty. With Mensah through on goal and with an obvious goal scoring opportunity, Russell was perhaps fortunate to only receive a caution. Dan Holman stepped up to tuck the resultant spot kick past Russell for 1-0. Rovers spurned a number of chances to respond and hit the crossbar before Mensah added Braintrees second mid-way through the second half. This time Holman proved to be the provider. Racing through the home defence, his effort was only partially blocked by Russell, but the free ball fell kindly to Mensah who, with Russell grounded, shot into an empty net for 2-0. Iron played out the remainder of the game comfortably and the three points took Braintrees points total to 52 - a tally that usually guarantees safety from relegation for another year. Next up for Iron is a trip to Lincoln City this coming Saturday afternoon, 15th March, before we welcome Lincoln City for the return three days later at the Amlin Stadium on Tuesday, 18th March, with kick-off at 7.45pm.
