The total number of confirmed and treated cases in Lagos stands at 13, of these; 7 have been treated and discharged, 5 have died while 1 person under treatment is stable and improving clinically (Source: Minister of Health). Port-Harcourt Just when we thought we were out of the woods, the Federal Ministry of Health has reported two 2 cases of Ebola Virus in Port-Harcourt, where an official of ECOWAS who had contact with the index case evaded surveillance and travelled to Port-Harcourt where he consulted with a doctor and was apparently treated for some EVD symptoms. After four days, following a man hunt for him, he returned to Lagos and was found to have recovered from EVD, unfortunately, the doctor that treated him died on the 22nd of August, 2014. Investigations and laboratory analysis have shown that this doctor died of EVD, the widow is now symptomatic and quarantined pending the outcome of laboratory tests on her. In view of this, 70 persons have been placed under surveillance in Port-Harcourt UPDATE #3 Nigeria has now recorded three 3 cases of EVD in secondary contacts of the index case, the Liberian-American, of these, one 1 was a doctor that treated an ECOWAS official who had primary contact with the index case, and two 2 were spouses of the primary contact of the index case. The total number of cases of EVD so far reported in the country is fifteen 15. The number of deaths is six 6, while the number of those successfully managed and discharged stands at seven 7. This now brings to two 2 the total number of EVD patients currently under treatment in Nigeria. The Federal Government, working with the Lagos State Government, Rivers State Government and other social partners, continues to maintain vigilance and strengthen the containment activities. The Federal Government has suspended the resumption of both private and public secondary and primary schools in Nigeria to 13th October, 2014. This is to ensure that adequate preventive measures are put in place before schools resume. It has become very important for all to observe high level of personal hygiene and not take anything for granted. On the 28th of August, 2014, WHO released an Ebola Response roadmap with the following objectives: 1. To achieve full geographic coverage with complementary Ebola response activities in countries with widespread and intense transmission 2. To ensure emergency and immediate application of comprehensive Ebola response interventions in countries with an initial case(s) or with localized transmission 3. To strengthen preparedness of all countries to rapidly detect and respond to an Ebola exposure, especially those sharing land borders with an intense transmission area and those with international transportation hubs.
