RESTORE HOPE AND STOP THE BOATS Sound simplistic? Not once you - TopicsExpress

RESTORE HOPE AND STOP THE BOATS Sound simplistic? Not once you read the article by Paul Komesaroff and Suresh Sundram (a psychiatrist I personally know to have done some hard yards with asylum seekers). They are talking about what needs to happen in Sri Lanka so that people feel able to stay put, although their ideas are also more generally relevant. “Once a war is over,” they say “a gap is exposed that is incompletely filled by the absence of conflict alone. This is the space once occupied by hope in the future...” If we do our bit to promote healing, we can honour our role as international citizen, restore compassion to our dealings with fellow human beings, and save a heap of money on “ever more expensive, xenophobic, morally corrupting and ultimately ineffective policies”…With thanks to these writers…Joan Beckwith.
