REVIEW: Baring Teeth - Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins These guys - TopicsExpress

REVIEW: Baring Teeth - Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins These guys debut was high up on my top of the year 2011 list and also one of the first reviews Ive written for this group. 3 years after Atrophy, the follow-up is finally out and Baring Teeth have tweaked their formula quite a bit. The first thing you will notice is the very organic production. It is not a Metal production by any means. The drums are very natural sounding and the guitars are barely distorted, not even very crunchy. I have a lot of respect for that, since - as a guitarist - I know how much more precision it takes to make something with little distortion sound as tight and precise as something with lots of it. More gain really does mask a lot of little imperfections. And then theres something about the material on Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins. Its just not a lesson in Gorguts worship with a modern touch anymore. While Baring Teeth are still staying true to the dissonance, free form structures and general musical direction of the debut, Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins has a much more unique quality to it. I love tracks like The Great Unwashed, which builds up with lots of dynamics, erupts in dissonance and destruction, only to blend into the next track smoothly. And I even really dig the slower parts, which werent among my personal highlights of the debut. They make the production shine and add a lot of depth to the overall vibe of the album, as perfectly displayed in the epic The Unwilling. Baring Teeth have really managed to become a unique force with this new record. You can still tell that Gorguts is an influence, but contrary to the debut, it doesnt dominate the material at all. With Ghost Chorus Among Old Ruins, this 3-piece has found its own voice and aesthetic... and its way back on my highlights of the year list.
