REVIEW OF THE DICKIES / DAIKAIJU / THE FIENDZ I like to write a short review when I come home from a rock event, I dont know where to start with this one. I saw the Dickies Friday and the show was great. The Dickies are a high energy punk band from California known for their sense of humor speeding up some covers of your favorite oldies, like Knights in White Satin, Paranoid, the Banana Split theme, to list a few. I can see already. this will not be short. The Friday show was really good and I knew they were playing in Bordentown on Thursday. Now would have been yesterday. The show is at place no one heard of called The Open Arts Stage, right on RT 130. If you check their website, they show a little cabaret style room with tables. Tonight, no tables but rows of chairs and some space up front for dancing. Yeah, Im going to get to that part. I checked out the opening bands online, just to get a feel. The Fiendz are a punk band from Jersey that has been together a long time. The middle bands name I still cant pronounce. They sounded all surfy and spacey on reveb nation. Sounds like a good night. I got there early and struck a conversation with a nice young lady who likes older men but already has a boyfriend. I tried. After getting inside and finding seats, she was in the first row by herself and I was 2 rows back by myself. I dont get right up front much these days but I figured I would sit with the nice young lady in the front row. What can go wrong. We have seats. The Fiendz come on and they are my kind of band. In the spirit of the Ramones, rapid fire, one song after the next good old 70s style punk. The nice young lady and I did a little headbanging in our respective chairs. Quick change over for the second band, DAIKAIJU. What happens next is almost indescribable but I will try. After the equipment is set up, the band members go off stage and come back with tribal like masks and all painted up. OK, cool enough. They start to play some high energy surf instrumental and the one guitarist starts pulling people out of their chairs to get them up by the stage. He does not take no for an answer. After he pulls you from your seat, he shoves the chairs away. He pulls me up and motions that I dance with aforementioned young lady. I cant imagine how bad that looked from the cheap seats. The next 40 minutes is just the best hard surf rock you would want mixed with pure chaos. We now have 2 guitar players stalking the room, tangling up cables and placing audience members where they want them. They have us on the floor, the have us stand up, Jumping and waving in the air, back on the floor. This is show that you will need to see for yourself if they ever come back this way. By the end of their set, they are on the dance floor area, including full drum set, and most of the first three rows of people are on the stage, including me. I know I have talked about the big stupid rock grin. Oh geez, I thought my face had frozen in big stupid rock grin. For the grand finale, they pulled out a table and placed my nice young lady on it like a virgin sacrifice. Then they piled guitars and drums all over her and left her twanging the still plugged in guitar. Did I mention they set the drum set on fire? Not with the girl under it, that was before. And then, they were gone. What just happened here? It was freaking rock theater like you you just dont get to see often. Remember that name, DAIKAIJU. We settle back into our seats while the Dickies get set up. Another quick change over. I am stoked now. The Dickies come on and Im right up front, like old days. Yeah! My nice young lady will protect me.The Dickies start playing, my nice young lady turns into mosh girl hell cat and it was, look out! I have been looking for someone to slam dance off for a long time and here was my chance. I got a couple way cool slams in before I was bull dozed out of the mosh pit. Never mind going to the YMCA, I need mixed martial arts training. I stayed up front though, just out of range. It was cool though, There were three mosh girls protecting each other. It was an all ages show and there some father and son mosh bonding. But one thing needs to be said, fat sweaty 40 somethings in the mosh pit is not a pretty sight. The Dickies did almost the exact same set as they did Friday and I expected that, same jokes and all. They still have the stage props although most will remember Stuart with more pubes. All in all it was great night. Look for Randy Now to bring more shows to the Open Arts Stage and you should check it out if a band you like is playing. Its a nice intimate space. I found that I can still slam dance with out the use of a walker. It really is more fun, wait, if I finish that sentence its going to sound dirty. Lets just say, it is way more fun.....
