REVIEW: Piss Vortex - Piss Vortex I stumbled over a song of these guys on SoundCloud not that long ago and shortly after, they were featured on some blog with the announce of an upcoming debut album release. And it didnt take long to become reality. Piss Vortex are a young and fairly unique Grindcore band from Denmark, which is a surprise in itself, since I mostly think about cookie cutter Metal, when I think about this country. This couldnt be further from the truth in this case, though. Piss Vortex deliver a pissed off (see what I did there?) mixture of Grindcore and a good load of Gorguts-influence. But you know what? Thats actually cool! Its definitely an influence you dont hear in Grindcore that often and Im always for younger bands exploring and embracing territory thats usually outside of their realm. After all, you cant expect to be popular with the modern heavy music cool kids, not with an album like Piss Vortex. On top of it all, the production is anything but modern or even Metal. Its raw and organic - another thing you wouldnt necessarily expect from a younger band. Piss Vortex is boiling over with dissonance and a furious vocalist, who is barking his way through 14 songs of youthful anger. There is room for a more experimental edge here and there, leading to some more drawn-out, dissonant clean parts. The guitarwork in tracks like Liar(s) takes you straight into Obscura-territory, but it seems to be more of a hommage than a ripoff. Either way, it works great in the context of the brand of modern, spazzy Grindcore these guys deliver. Piss Vortex are refreshing, because their music is a big fat middle finger to a lot of their peers, who are probably stuck in shitty Metalcore and Deathcore with too much mainstream (which these guys are clearly pissing into... so many puns today) appeal. Piss Vortex is a great debut for a young band, so now lets see where it takes them.
