RIO GRANDE – Middle Township Committee plans a groundbreaking for the Robert Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex at 1 p.m., Friday, Sept. 12 at 7 Fulling Mill Road, Rio Grande, according to officials. A combination of a $580,000 county open space grant and partnership with Cape Express Soccer and Cape May County Disc Golf Association will allow the township to develop the 82-acre former Fort Apache Campground, according to a statement. “We are very excited to finally break ground on this ambitious project at Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex,” Mayor Tim Donohue said. “This endeavor is a great example of our efforts to bring good people together to do good work.” According to the statement, the complex will include a wildlife observation deck, boardwalk and fishing pier, along with a gazebo and picnic area. Other plans call for a playground, walking trails, fitness stations and a stage for acoustic performances. The partnership with private companies will allow the township to add five soccer fields and a regulation-size disc golf course, according to the statement. These elements of the plan are being funded through public-private partnerships with Cape Express Soccer and the Cape May County Disc Golf Association. “The Ockie Wisting Recreation Complex will offer unique recreation opportunities for residents of all ages,” the mayor said. Robert Ockie Wisting, 77, had served his community as a volunteer firefighter for 51 years from 1955-2006, and led as Chief in 1965. He was the most respected man in the area, and definitely for us. He did so much here for the company. Total family man.
