RIP BERYL BOYD & ARCHIE PHILLIPS It is with great sadness that I have just learned of the sudden passing of Beryl Boyd after a short illness. Beryl married into the Boyd rallying dynasty. Her husband Derek drove along with his brother Adrian for the Lombard & Ulster Team in Escorts, and later for the British Leyland Team in a works Triumph TR8. The biggest rallying weekend in Dereks career came when he won the Ulster Rally in 1977 in a privately entered Porsche 911against stiff opposition from Russell Brookes Escort RS1800, Pentti Airikkalas Vauxhall Chevette and Brian Nelsons Porsche 911. RPM offers its sincere condolences to Derek, his daughters Roisin and Emma and the entire Boyd family. Archie Phillips, who passed away earlier in the week, was a track racing legend in the late 1960s and early 70s. Driving his pristinely prepared MG Midgets and Minis, Archie, who started racing late in life, was the man to beat in the hotly contested Mod Sports and Saloon races at the Irish Circuits. Archie, a very successful Belfast garage proprietor, also raced one of the glorious Chevron B16 sports racing cars and a Formula Libre Brabham BT36 which he lent to John Watson, who shattered the Kirkistown lap record, and to Jay Pollock on occasions. Again RPM offers their sincere condolences to the Phillips family.
