RIP #Branemark... The man who made millions smile. A very big loss of a great human being in the field of dentistry. We will always cherish the knowledge you gave us. Per-Ingvar Brånemark (born May 3, 1929 - Dec 20, 2014) was a Swedish orthopedic surgeon and research professor, touted as the father of modern dental implantology. The Brånemark Osseointegration Center (BOC), named after its founder, was founded in 1989 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Brånemarks discovery of osseointegration revolutionized the realm of implant dentistry and brought it from being a shunned field into one that became recognized and incorporated into dental school curricula and training programs. The discovery of osseointegration is what gave rise to more reliable dental implants. The process was stumbled upon by accident by a scientist named Per-Ingvar Brånemark who was using rabbits to study bone regeneration. He used a titanium chamber to try and aid bone regrowth, yet he found that the bone actually bonded to the titanium device in such a way that it could not be broken.
