RIP Dick Smith Makeup Artist Dick Smith passed away this evening at the age of 93. Dick was one of the most giving, caring people in our craft. Based in NYC, he would take calls from every makeup geek in the world, patiently answering questions. He cared about our craft and only wanted the best for it. He inspired hundreds to follow their dream and raised the bar (and shared the tips) for all of us. While many will recall his makeups for the EXORCIST or AMADEUS or LITTLE BIG MAN, here are two that I absolutely adore. Both are of Hal Holbrook. One is his 1967 CBS special as Mark Twain and the other as Lincoln for North & South II mini-series. He kindly gave me a quote for my my first Chaney book and was very gracious. I first met him at Universal in 1981 when he was doing some dead body for Ghost Story. As usual, he was most kind to a newbie, explaining in detail how the dummy head would work with cables. I was like a kid in Santas workshop. What I remember most is he treated me as an equal. Godspeed, Dick. And Thank You.
