RIP Esther Williams, 1921 - 2013. She appeared in mostly swimming roles in films from 1942 to the early 60s. Unable to compete in the 1940 Olympics because of the outbreak of World War II, she began a film career when discovered by MGM scouts performing in an Aquacade. When her career slowed down because the big musical extravaganzas were no longer popular, she finally retired from acting completely in 1963. Though not exactly a movie pioneer, her films were part of the main history of film with spoofs of the synchronized swimming scenes showing up in comedies like Blazing Saddles. Hats off to a real lady.
