RIP Jane Welsh Newcomb Whiting 1919-2014 My mother passed away early Thursday morning after ninety-five years of dedicated service to her family and her community. She was a sweet and gentle woman. Her annuals from Samohi and USC are filled with hundred of testimonials that tell the same tale. When I think of her life to that point, I am amazed. Born the daughter of a bank president, she had that life ripped from her soon after her tenth birthday when her father went from president to pauper with the closing of both of his banks. Graduating from high school in 1937 (in the tents and temporary classrooms that Samohi improvised after the devastating 1936 earthquake) she had no way of knowing the prosperity that was coming her way, yet she seemed to make no enemies, and burned no bridges. Serving her country during WWII as a Navy Wave brought her to Miami where she met my father (a decorated war hero, recovering from his wounds) and there began the largest chapter of her life: her family and her selfless, endless, boundless dedication to her five children. In addition, she served the community of Santa Monica generously. Especially through the Santa Monica Breakfast Club (founded by her mother, Enid Newcomb Winslow), the Santa Monica Historical Society, and always by voting and making herself available for service at the local polling place. As her youngest child I can say that she introduced me to everything, and made sure that my distracted mind took time to see beauty in the world, especially in the mountains and deserts of Southern California. Heaven is lucky to have her.
