RIP the great Gough Whitlam....ESPECIALLY in light of the completely sorry state of affairs in Australia today regarding the political leadership of the country and the unnecessary silly direction things are heading there generally it is all the more important to remember this man and the great things he did: created Australia’s national health insurance scheme, Medibank; abolished university fees; introduced state aid to independent schools and needs-based school funding; returned traditional lands in the Northern Territory to the Gurindji people; drafted (although did not enact) the first commonwealth lands right act; established diplomatic relations with China, withdrew the remaining Australian troops from Vietnam; introduced no-fault divorce laws; passed the Racial Discrimination Act; blocked moves to allow oil drilling on the Great Barrier Reef; introduced environmental protection legislation; and removed God Save the Queen as the national anthem....COMPLETELY the opposite of the kind of actions being witnessed today by the Abbott government under the due influence of the very nasty lobby group IPA (Institute of Public Affairs...better put Institute of Currupt Big Business Practises..Affairs...) Below is a repeat of a post of mine from ages ago which is basically the transcript of the beginning of Abbotts woeful speech at the 70th anniversary celebrations of the ICBBPA. The very reason why there is such loony left wing reactionary politics today (why does everything have to always be so ideological based please tell me..hello logic anyone?) is a direct result of such obvious loony right wing reactionary politics by people like Abbott and co. The more right wing the politics and ideology, the more left wing the opposition goes - is an endless stupid cycle.... twas in the garden of Eden that Adam and Eve could do almost anything they pleased...but freedom has its limits and its abuses as this foundational story makes only too clear. And yet without freedom we can hardly be human, hardly be worthy of creation in the image of G-d......the coalition will repeal the carbon tax. Abolish the department of climate change. Well repeal section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act at least in its current form. We will abolish new health and environmental bureaucracies we will deliver 1 billion dollars in red tape savings every year. We will develop Northern Australia. We will repeal the mining tax. We will create a one stop shop for environmental approvals, we will privatise Medibank, we will trim the public service and we will stop throwing good money after bad on the NBN (National Broadbank Network). So ladies and gentlemen...that is a big fat yes to many of the 75 specific policies you urged upon me in that particular issue of the magazine https://youtube/watch?v=j4pA5nTr8i0
