Here’s who owned their performance in week 16: Some big things went down in the 4 games that happened over the 17th week of the 2014 CFL season. 1 team reinforced their first-place position, whilst ending another team’s post-season hopes. 3 teams vied to establish a true leader of their respective division, and 2 more teams fought it out to really show where the chips will fall after all is said and done with the regular season. In the week’s first game, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats were responsible for hosting the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Friday night. It was the home team that shouldered the brunt of the pressure as a loss would have put them back 2 points from the winner of Saturday’s game between Montreal and Toronto. Although the game was not perfect, the Tiger-Cats put together a solid second-half the take down Ottawa 16-6. Zach Collaros continued to impress as he was able to extend plays with his legs seemingly on a whim. Ottawa’s defensive line presented good pressure on the young quarterback, but with targets performing like Bakari Grant, the Cats were sure-footed in their win. As Toronto hosted Montreal in the first of 2 games on Saturday, the Argonauts and the Alouettes both looked to do the same thing. Clearly, like any team in the CFL the goal was to win, but for these 2 teams a win would mean a 4-point slide wherein one team would inevitably drop out of the 3-way tie that existed after week 16. As expected, Montreal’s defence troubled the Toronto offence and held Ricky Ray to only 12 points on the outing. While not as productive as recently, Jonathon Crompton was able to string together some very precise passes, primarily to receivers like Brandon London and SJ Green. Green had an especially good night as he continued to provide the game’s photographers with outstretched photo-ops. The Alouettes ultimately took the game 20-12, which puts them into a tie with Hamilton atop the east yet again. And then, there were 2. To close the competition on Saturday, Winnipeg hosted Calgary in hopes of stopping a tragic 6-game losing slide. With Bo Levi Mitchell returning to competition, the Stampeders established an early lead and exploited several holes in the Bomber secondary by way of large receptions in the hands of Maurice Price and Joe West. After what must have been a motivating half-time speech from coaching staff, the Bombers returned and clawed back to battle Calgary. Paris Cotton rushed for 108 yards and 2 touchdowns in the effort. Alas, the effort did not result in a Winnipeg victory as the man himself, Jon Cornish would run out the clock (to the fine tune of 160 rushing-yards) and close the game 33-23 for the first place Stampeders. It was in the final game of the week though, that the RIVALUS Featured Player entered the coliseum and emerged victorious. To state that the game between Edmonton and Saskatchewan was a battle would be a gross understatement. With only 2-points separating the squads, a Saskatchewan victory would have nullified any mid-season woes the Riders had experienced. Kerry Joseph started behind center for the Roughriders to take on his former team (after retiring) on Sunday. Although the infusion of a veteran quarterback electrified Saskatchewan’s offence, Dexter McCoil of the Esks still found his opportunities to make an impact. The linebacker added 7 tackles and a drive-stopping interception to his 2014 totals. The Eskimos had successes elsewhere, notably on special teams as Kendial Lawrence eclipsed defenders on a kick returned the full length of the field for a touchdown. Lawrence also contributed 71 yards of offence in the air. Although Lawrence provided a spark that opened the door for Edmonton’s eventual win, it was the consistent contributions of the league’s leading receiver Adarius Bowman that really compounded to put Edmonton on top. Bowman has quietly remained the league-leading receiver for the bulk of 2014. He is currently averaging 84.5 yards per game and has taken the ball to the house a career-high 6 times with 3 games left to play. What’s most astounding about the season that Bowman has put together though, is his success relative to the other top receivers. Adarius currently sits nearly 400-yards ahead of Clarence Denmark, his closest competitor for receiving yards. In a season dominated by defensive play, and low-scoring offences, the big-bodied Bowman has provided Edmonton quarterbacks a consistent and potent target to throw at, regardless of coverage.
