ROADCASTING legend Archie MacPherson has said that it was a “sense of guilt” about letting the United Kingdom slip away unopposed that made him speak out against a Yes vote. MacPherson, for decades the voice of Scottish football commentary, set the referendum heather alight with an impassioned speech against independence that has become an online hit. Yesterday he admitted his plea for shared British values and against SNP scaremongering on the NHS had come “straight from the heart””. In a Daily Record interview he urged others to follow his lead engage in persuading people to vote No in three weeks time. “It was straight from the heart, that’s for sure. It came from a sense of anger and impotence, a sense of letting this Union slip away from us without doing anything,” said MacPherson. “I just felt a sense of guilt coming over me and when they invited me to Dundee I let rip with my views.” His off-the-cuff eight minute speech in the Caird Hall, in support of Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling, tacked, he said, “the evasions of those who are seeking independence.” He said: “When I saw the SNP making the NHS a political football and indulging in the kind of scaremongering they accused the No camp off , that sickened me.” But MacPherson was at his most stirring when the spoke about the shared values of Scotland and Britain and how he is as concerned about foodbanks in Liverpool as he is foodbanks in Glasgow and Dundee. And, using no notes or script, he spoke with great emotion about the struggle working people on both sides of the border have always shared. Yesterday he explained how Scottish values were British values too “The community I was brought up in the east end of Glasgow and at the core of Labour values I live with, was compassion and the universality of these beliefs. I never thought, when I grew up, that I lived in a little patch and that these values only belonged to that patch.” dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/broadcast-legend-archie-macpherson-tells-4125169
