ROMAN BRITAIN: Legionary soldiers were known to carry a pilum, or javelin. The pilum had a total length of about two metres and was constructed out of a wooden shaft with an iron head. The small bolt-like tip was highly effective at penetrating its target. The long slender iron shank was designed so that it would buckle on impact – so it could not be re-used by the enemy. Those clever Romans! Iron pilum heads were found at the Roman fort site at Hod Hill in Dorset and date from the 1st century AD.
