ROUND 3 – A1 GRADE MATCH REVIEWS CROWD RECORDS TUMBLE DESPITE “SAM THE FAN” AND ALICE “THE WORK EXPERIENCE GIRL” NO SHOWS Crowd records were sent tumbling last Thursday night when four people surged into the David Collings Leisure Centre to watch the round 3 action. With eight club singles titles between them, the match of the round was undoubtedly the showdown between Jarryd “The J C Train” Cathcart and Chris “Thrasher” Robinson, and when the dust settled it was six times winner Cathcart that came away with the points after securing a 4-2 win. “The J C Train” remains the only undefeated player in the competition and his side Mornington, the only undefeated team, after partner Mitchell Peacock recorded his first win in the top grade against Des Gamble, to contribute to a comprehensive 4-1 victory on the night. Frankston’s Nick “the man with no nickname” Underwood and partner “Jumping Jay” Debernardi got to sing their team song for the first time this season when they smashed the underperforming Dromana pair of Max “Hollywood” Coulthard and “Gentleman Jim” Conlon 5-0 on the show court. Meanwhile club veterans Geoff “Lobby” Lloyd and Jim “Sparky” Furness got off to a flyer in their game against Mt Martha’s Peter “Trainmaker” Cathcart and Greg “Discount” Price but couldn’t maintain the momentum, eventually going down 2-3 to their younger and darker haired opponents. “Sparky” led “Trainmaker” 2-0 in a match that ultimately could have clinched victory for the historical Tyabb pair, but perhaps not surprisingly, the 163-year-old Furness tired quickly and lost the next four in a row to go down 4-2. “Lobby” Lloyd’s form continues to be of concern, as he dropped another two to leave him with a 1-5 record after three rounds. Being the young and inexperienced player in the team will only buy him so much time as he endeavours to turn his season around and a match up next week against a clearly out of form Shane “Chainsaw” O’Connor may be just what he needs. “Chainsaw” put in a shocker against your Facebook editor and Paul “Sidewinder” Davies in the remaining match of the round. He was clearly not himself and actually who he was on the night I have no idea. Wins by my partner and I against the “Chainsaw” impersonator were enough to get us over the line 3-2 despite the fact that Colin Sim had refused to lower the Langwarrin flag, playing a cracker of a match against “Sidewinder” and eventually outlasting him, to record a hard fought win in the seventh.
