ROUND 9 – A1 GRADE MATCH REVIEWS “D C HAMMER” FLATTENS “FRANKSTON EXPRESS” Frankston’s man- boy combination of Sam Palmer “The Frankston Express” and Geoff “Lobby” Lloyd have booked a place in the gold medal playoff game in two weeks time after a 3-2 win over Mt Martha. With Mt. Martha’s “Iron Jay” Mark Flavel out of action with some flimsy excuse about being busy at work, Australia’s reigning No.1 ranked U/18 player, Dillon Cathcart “The D C Hammer” lined up with “Gentleman Jim” Conlon to take on the might of Frankston. However even a Cathcart in the doubles lineup was not enough to lift the winless Mt Martha out of their table tennis doldrums and a 3-1 result set Frankston up for their eighth win of the season. An angry and frustrated “D C Hammer” took his revenge on both Frankston players in the singles, brutalizing “Lobby” in a fashion that may well have resulted in the laying of criminal assault charges if it had occurred out on the streets, before humbling “The Frankston Express” 4-1 in an awesome display of his table tennis talents. Elder sibling, Jarryd “The J C Train” Cathcart led Mornington to a 3-2 win over Langwarrin and made it 14 wins from 14 matches after an injury plagued season. The Mornington marauder is now only one game behind Palmer (15-3) on the winner’s list and with both players going head to head in round 10, Cathcart has a chance of taking a share of the coveted Leading Player award if he can defeat Palmer. This will be another cracker of a match, which will undoubtedly attract the undivided attention of our two regular spectators. My beloved Carrum Downs is also in the mix for a gold medal play off game after a 4-1 win against a disappointing Somerville. Chris “Thrasher” Robinson was particularly disappointing after failing to show up for the match, leaving his partner “Pretty Boy” Du Plooy, to salvage what he could from the round 9 encounter. “Pretty Boy” went down 4-1 to my partner Phil Bolitho “The Carrum Downs Colossus” before he and your Face Book editor squared off for yet another battle between two men prone to mental fragility at critical match times. With scores tied at 3 all and “Pretty Boy” complaining about his legs feeling wobbly, your Face Book editor was presented with a wonderful winning opportunity, but unfortunately the very mention of the word wobbly, made my own legs start to feel wobbly. Of course it then became a classic battle between two blokes with wobbly legs to see who would make fewer unforced errors, a battle it pains me say, was won comprehensively in the end by the spotlight loving “Pretty Boy.” Hit hard and prosper Greig Whitelaw
