ROUTE AND ROAD CLOSURES FOR FUNERAL AND BURIAL PROCESSION FOR CHARLESTON COUNTY DEPUTY Charleston, S.C.—The funeral service for Charleston County Deputy Sheriff Joe Matuskovic will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church at 5 St. Teresa Drive (fronting Hwy. 17) at 10:00 AM followed by a burial at Old Saint Andrews Parish Church at 2604 Ashley River Road. Due to the outpouring of care and concern from the community and region for Deputy Matuskovic and his family, a large number of public safety and community members are anticipated to attend. The volume of attendance will require road closures on Savannah Highway (U.S. 17 S) and later on Ashley River Road (SC-61). The procession to the cemetery will have traffic implications on areas of U.S. 17, I-526, Glenn McConnell, Bees Ferry Road and SC 61. Residents in the neighborhoods surrounding Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and Old Saint Andrews Parish Church should expect extra parking to take place on their streets. Parking at the burial site is extremely limited, necessitating remote parking, which may require a half mile or more walk to the site. FROM 2501 BEES FERRY ROAD (FUNERAL HOME) TO BLESSED SACRAMENT The procession will leave McAllister-Smith Funeral Home at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Monday. The route will be Bees Ferry to Glenn McConnell Parkway to I-526 to Exit at end of Hwy. 17 N. The route will continue on 17 N to Blessed Sacrament Church off of Hwy 17 between Moore Drive and Parish Road. The side roads will be closed as the procession passes and immediately re-opened. The procession is anticipated to take about 30 minutes. BEFORE AND DURING THE SERVICE AT BLESSED SACRAMENT: Beginning at 8:00 a.m., the southbound lanes of Savannah Highway (U.S. 17) will be closed from Wesley Drive to Avondale Ave and will remain closed until approximately 12:30 p.m. (the length of the service may require the street to remain closed longer). The northbound lanes will remain open and one- way toward the Ashley River Bridges. PROCESSION TO OLD SAINT ANDREWS PARISH CHURCH CEMETERY: At 11:00 a.m., Ashley River Road (SC-61) will be closed in both directions between Bees Ferry Road and Parsonage Road until as late as 3:00 p.m. Before and after the procession (during the burial service), the northbound lane of SC-61 will be available for use for residential traffic only. Residents in the neighborhoods only accessible by SC-61 should note that during the time that the procession is on SC-61, both northbound and southbound lanes will be closed, even to residential traffic. The procession may begin as early as 11:30 a.m. It will begin on U.S. 17 South, continue to I-526 East to exit 11B toward S Carolina 61 N/Ashley River Rd, continue on Glenn McConnell Parkway, turn right onto Bees Ferry Road, turn right onto SC-61, arriving at Old Saint Andrews Parish Church. The roads along the procession route will remain open to traffic (with the exception of the sections of U.S. 17 S and SC-61 outlined above). However, as the procession passes, intersections along these roads will be closed by law enforcement and reopened once the procession has passed. For updates regarding traffic and street closures check the city website (charleston-sc.gov) or follow the City of Charleston on Twitter (twitter/CityCharleston) where the most current information will be posted regularly until the service and burial are concluded.
