ROXBURY TO HONOR A LEGEND Roxbury will honor one of the greatest players in its 102-year history before Friday nights 7 p.m. home game against West Morris. Len Perfettis number 65 will be officially retired during a ceremony set to begin 30 minutes prior to the kickoff. Each player will also wear a decal with his number on their helmet through the remainder of the campaign. Perfetti was was a lineman a co-captain during his senior year in 1973. The Gaels were 24-3 and won three Iron Area Conference during his time in the lineup. The NJSIAA playoffs didnt start until the following year. He then moved on to the University of Delaware, where he cracked the starting lineup as a senior in 1977. But a few weeks into the season, he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, and never played again. He died from the disease on Nov. 18, 1978 at age 22. Between the time of his diagnosis and passing, and while he was undergoing treatment, he spent time as a volunteer coach with Roxbury. The team annually awards a Len Perfetti Award, which attracted the attention of former team manager and 2011 graduate Will Harrigan, who has also taken on the role of school sports historian. Upon learning more about Perfettis life, he penned a story for the local town paper, which introduced a new generation of Roxbury citizens to Perfetti. The former standout was then inducted into the school Hall of Fame, and the decision for Fridays recognition followed. The only other retired number at Roxbury is the No. 88 that was worn by 1988 graduate Dave Moore, who went on to play at Pittsburgh and then in the NFL. No other uniform numbers have been retired in any sport at the school. sidelinechatter/buzz.htm
