ROYAL ASCOT PREVIEW - Day 1 Venue: ROYAL ASCOT Date: 17 June 2014 First race: 2.30pm (Six Races - Flat) Going: Good (Straight Course); Good to Soft (Round Course) Twelve months after his storming late denied Shea Shea, Sole Power is back to defend his Kings Stand Stakes crown and Eddie Lynam has snapped up British champion rider Richard Hughes for the plum ride • The biggest week of the British Flat season kicks off on Tuesday and there are no fewer than 14 Irish-trained runners on day one of Royal Ascot where Eddie Lynams sprinting star Sole Power is back to try and repeat his success in the Group 1 Kings Stand Stakes (3.45pm). Johnny Murtagh produced Sole Power to lead in the final few strides 12 months ago and he will renew his rivalry with the Mike De Kock-trained Shea Shea - this time with Richard Hughes doing the steering. Aidan OBrien relies on Guerre in the five-furlong contest following his impressive performance last time at Naas. • The sensational six-race card commences with the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes (2.30pm) where Toronado from the Richard Hannon stable is a short-priced favourite but Aidan and Joseph OBrien team up with second favourite Verrazano who caught the eye behind Olympic Glory at Newbury. Sabrina Harty has a rare runner at the Royal meeting in the shape of the consistent Ansgar who will be ridden by Rory Cleary. • Ger Lyons has enjoyed a sublime season to date and he will fancy his chances of winning the Group 2 Coventry Stakes (3.05pm) with the unbeaten Cappella Sansevero who has won all three starts to date. The betting is currently headed by War Envoy who lost his unbeaten record at Naas behind Kool Kompany but was reported by Aidan OBrien to have not been 100 per cent fit for that event. • The St Jamess Palace Stakes (4.25pm) has been billed as a match between English 2,000 Guineas winner Night Of Thunder and Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Kingman but last years Coventry hero War Command has his favoured conditions and shouldnt be ruled out.
