RSS disrespected the Indian tricolor at the time of Independence in 1947, says Ananthakrishnan Pakshirajan, while chiding Sudhakar Kasturi for his sharp remarks questioning Nehrus patriotism (rather the lack of it) in his early days. PAK quotes Anand Patwardhan, a secondary source and a known RSS baiter, to claim that RSS magazine Organizer wrote this at that time - “The Tricolour will never be respected and owned by Hindus. The word three is in itself an evil, and a flag having three colours will certainly produce a very bad psychological effect and is injurious to a country. But, what is the truth? RSS had voiced strong opposition to Tricolor as national flag (in place of Saffron Flag, Pavitra Bhagawa Dhwaja) and Jana Gana Mana as National Anthem (in place of Vande Mataram, the heartbeat of every patriot during freedom struggle). But when the Constituent Assembly adapted these national symbols as *official* RSS respected it, even while continuing its opposition ideologically. RSS *never* did anything that would show disrespect to these national symbols. Over time, RSS also started to adopt the official National symbols more publicly.
