RUINS OF THE WEEK: Jeburgh Abbey. Located just across the border in the Scottish Border Country, Jedburgh was founded around 1118 by King David I as an Augustinian priory. It became a full-fledged abbey dedicated to the Virgin Mary about 1147. It has been known through the years by at least 83 different names or spellings. The abbey grew to such high status and reputation that the abbot was invited to attend Scottish parliaments. The abbey was raided and sacked by the English numerous times, starting after the Battle of Stirling in 1297 and continuing until 1544. The end for the abbey came in the form of the Scottish Reformation in 1560. The monks were allowed to remain, but the abbey was used as the parish kirk for the new religion. It remained thus until 1871, when it was deemed to be unsafe and a new parish kirk was built.
