RULING REGARDING THE SURAH AS RINGTONE ! Question: I would just like to know if it is permissible to have a surah as a ringtone? Answer: It has become a common practice for Muslims to use verses of the Holy Qur’an as a ringtone on their phones. Although their intentions are good and sincere, it is actually an act that is tantamount to dishonouring the Holy Qur’an. There are many reasons that using a Qur’anic verse as a ringtone is considered disrespectful towards the Holy Qur’an: 1. Change of meaning, the majority of the time, when someone answers their phone that has a Qur’anic ringtone, they do not wait for the reciter to come to the end of an ayah, rather they answer immediately, cutting out a portion of the ayah, which may distort the intended meaning of the verse. 2. Ringing in the toilet, many a times, the phone rings while a person is answering the call of nature, and listening to Qur’anic verses at such a place and situation is a complete violation of the sanctity of the Holy Qur’an, the words of Allah Ta’ala. 3. Using the Qur’an for a worldly purpose, by using Qur’anic verses as a ringtone is misuse of the Noble purpose of the Holy Qur’an. It is the word of Allah and source of guidance and salvation in the hereafter. However, using it for a secondary and worldly purpose, like as a ringtone, so that a person becomes aware that somebody is trying to speak to him, is blatant dishonour of the Holy Quran. Imam Ibn Abideen ﻪﻠﻟﺍ ﻪﻤﺣﺭ writes: ﻰﻟﺎﻌﺗ ﻪﻠﻟﺍ ﺢﺒﺴﻓ ﺏﻮﺜﻟﺍ ﺮﺟﺎﺘﻟﺍ ﺢﺘﻓ ﺍﺫﺇ ﻪﻴﻠﻋ ﻪﻠﻟﺍ ﻰﻠﺻ ﻲﺒﻨﻟﺍ ﻰﻠﻋ ﻰﻠﺻ ﻭﺃ ﺓﺩﻮﺟ ﻱﺮﺘﺸﻤﻟﺍ ﻡﻼﻋﺇ ﻪﺑ ﺪﻳﺮﻳ ﻢﻠﺳﻭ ﻩﻭﺮﻜﻣ ﻚﻟﺬﻓ ﻪﺑﻮﺛ “If a shopkeeper reveals some clothes and says ‘Subhanallah’ or invokes blessings on the Prophet ﻢﻠﺳﻭ ﻪﻴﻠﻋ ﻪﻠﻟﺍ ﻰﻠﺻ, to alert the buyer of it’s quality, then it is Makrooh (Tahreemi).” (Raddul Muhtar: 1/518, Dar al- Kutub al-Ilmiyyah) It can be understood that it is not even permissible to say Subhanallah for a worldly purpose or a worldly gain, likewise the Qur’an cannot be utilised to fulfil a worldly need that can be fulfilled quite easily by other means. And Allah Ta’ala knows best.zakir naik
