Rabies detected in skunk located in the City: The City of Greeley Police Department Animal Control Officers contained a skunk on Monday that was tested and found to be positive for the rabies virus. Rabies is a neurotropic virus that is transmitted through saliva contact from infected animals. The skunk was located in the 100 block of N. 23rd Avenue and transported to the Health Department for testing. On Tuesday evening, the Health Department confirmed that the skunk was infected with rabies virus and was capable of infecting other animals or humans through a bite or exposure to its saliva. The Greeley Police Department is encouraging anyone who has had contact with a skunk, or had an animal bitten by a skunk in the last week to contact the Weld County Health Department and medical professionals. Infected animals will display odd activity and can become very aggressive. A second skunk has also been located that is being tested at this time and results are pending. The second skunk was located in the 2100 block of 7th Street. It is important that anyone in the community observing a wild animal or pet with these strange actions to use extreme caution, call the police department immediately and stay away from the animal. The Health Department is in the process of placing flyers in the immediate areas where the skunks were found and contacting citizens about the problem. No additional information is available at this time, and when further results are known they will be released.
