Race Report 14 September There were 442 runners today, a healthy number, with 38 first timers (29 were genuine first timers to parkrun and 9 were parkrun tourists) and 92 PB’s despite some of the bridges being slippery from the Friday deluge. Some of those PB’s from long serving runners include: Jo Bennett (Bramhall Runners) in 34.36 on her 43rd run at Bramhall Emma Turner in 31.46 on her 39th run Matthew Cordes (Bramhall Runners) in 25.07 on his 83rd run Fiona Cooke in 23.54 on her 49th run Kevin McCarthy in 20.23 on his 57th run Paul Plummer in 20.14 on his 24th run At the front of the train, for the men the top spot went to first timer Robert Orton (Tavistock AC) in a fast time of 16.42 making it the 20th fastest time ever at Bramhall. Robert has only run seven parkruns and has won every parkrun he’s participated in so far. Second was Iain Murdoch in 17.49. Iain continues to perform at his maximum ability as shown by the consistency of his last five fast runs (17.51, 17.44, 17.47, 17.46 and today’s 17.49). Third, and pushing Iain all the way, was Gavin Astin in 17.51 and the highest age grading of the day at 82.6%. Gavin is one of the best V50 runners in the North West, often wins the V50 prize in big races and has an annoying habit of just beating me every time over the Magic Mile (2 sec), 5ks (10 sec) and 10ks (20 sec)! Other notable performances in the top 20 include PB’s from Nicholas Hicketts (5th in 18.04), James Cooper (6th in 18.14 in justification of the August Sweatshop prize) and vibram expert Alan Burton 18.15 in 7th). It was a pleasure to run alongside Alan today because his running style is so quiet due to the way he runs forefoot as a barefoot runner. He is as silent as the night unlike most of the rest of us trainer-wearers who sound like the Red Army marching past Tiananmen Square. Maybe listen to how much sound the planting of your shoes make next time you run as the quieter you are the more efficient runner you are since you are breaking less. Paul Light had a good race with a PB of 18.52 (V55) and an age grading of 81.5% and Rob Currie as consistent as ever in 19.23 (80.7% for V55). For the women, Jo Adshead was first to finish (for the first time) in a lovely time of 22.22. Second was Eve Gibson in 22.58 and third was Natalia Tavini in a PB time of 23.02 whilst Mum Jill marshalled on the wooden bridge and Dad helped young Matteo to a lovely PB time of 26.26. Last weekend a small select number of Bramhall parkrunners took part in the infamous local hike/run called The Bullock Smithy. This is a serious undertaking as it is a 56 mile 8,000 feet circular loop from Hazel Grove into the Peak District via Edale Cross, Castleton, Peak Forest and Rainow. Names and faces I recognised from Bramhall parkrun included Andy Fowler (11 hours 33 min), Tom Peers (12.31), David Hatch (12.48), Laurence Graves (12.50), Andrew Mainwaring (13.48), Steve Fairclough (14.09) and Lee Coulson (18.38). It was the Great North run on Sunday and to put the super elite runners in perspective to us mortals, the men passed the first 5k of the half marathon in a split time of 14.24 whilst the elite women ran their final 5k split in 15.03. Keep running. Charlie Batho
