"Race prejudice is the devil unchained" -Charles Chestnutt Charles Chestnutt, author in the late 19th and early 20th century his most famous work being The Marrow of Tradition which voiced the tragedy of Wilmington race riots. He paved the way for Harlem Renaissance writers of the early 20th century. In The Marrow of Tradition he was one of the first non-slave writers to depict a minstrel dance known as The Cakewalk. This dance was first of something that may have led to WEB Dubois theory of Double Consciousness, blacks were mocking whites thorough this dance but whites thought it was the blacks being subservient and dancing for them. #StayWoke
