Racial abuse of an African Australian The Queensland African - TopicsExpress

Racial abuse of an African Australian The Queensland African Communities Council (QACC) has been appalled and shocked by the video of the racist abuse that one of our community members was subjected to on the train while doing his job. QACC strongly condemns the attack. While this attack was filmed and posted online, we know there are many other acts of racism against members of our community that go unnoticed and unreported. While we are very disappointed that we live in a community where some of us are subjected to racism, we take heart in the reaction within the wider community in condemning this particular attack and rejecting this type of behaviour. It is equally important that we dont combat hate with hate. We ask all commentators and everyone in the community, including African Australians, to exercise words of love and calm, not hatred towards the offenders. They are young and it is equally difficult for their families to come to turns with what has happened. If we want people in our community who think and act like this to change their mindset, then we need to approach them with goodwill and compassion, in order to begin a dialog that will help turn things around. This is how we choose to stand up against racism. We are in touch with the victim and we will support him in any way we can during this difficult time. This incident has demonstrated that it is really time for all of us as Australians to stand up against racism. It is time to move out of racial circles and build on our strengths of unity in diversity. The QACC Management Committee will work with community leaders to look at how the community can come together to take a tangible stand against racism. We are also available to provide support to any community member who has been affected by this incident. If you have been the victim of racism or witnessed someone being racially vilified, we encourage you to report it to the Queensland Anti-Discrimination Commission.
