Racing selections 071313 Saturday Many races of importance on tap for the 13th o July 2013- over at Colonial Turf grounds, they have a renewal of the Virginia Derby- a G2 event at the “classic” distance of 10 furlongs and 10 have ascertained their running intentions- I landed on a long shot 20/1 ML -Gefest, by Shakespeare out of Snow Kid- having lost its last heat by 25 lengths Gefest, seems hardly the one but lets look at his pedigree and see if that offers a glimmer of hope- firstly Shakespeare is a son of Theatrical, a very good man on the turf- on the ff side this is a segment of long winded 16-C thru 3rd dam Alabama Stakes winner November Snow- and further back we come to Blue Denim by Blue Larkspur, a hero for big heart aficionado’s- the favorite is hot item Rydilluc who looked mighty good winning the rich Penn Mile recently- At Delaware Park their “Oaks” gets another run it is a G2 event to be engaged for 8.5 furlongs- my choice is rail lass Alli Leigh, the offspring of Student Council x Allison P.-in her last engagement the Go For Wand, she ran a uninspiring 3rd and the odds maker was equally unimpressed so she is set at 12/1 ML- has she any remote hopes lingering in her “papers”? her grandam was sired by 1976 Preakness hero Elocutionist, which usually is a terminal sign in a pedigree- but she was unbeaten Christiana Stable’s- Temper the Wind, ancestress to Stem The Tide- the ff is 1-A -as for the favorite in this Oaks, it may fall to Tell A Great Story, a daughter of Bluegrass Cat- she won the Go For Wand by a desperate nose- At Belmont Park they are showing one of their most famed events the Man O War Stakes, a test which has been somewhat diminished in importance by the ravenous Breeders Cup programs- it is G1 turf race run at mile and 3/8ths and I’ve decided “Coach” Lucas has the best item 2/1 ML choice Optimizer, who hasn’t won since Fair Grounds in February, but he has been engaging top competition- Point of Entry, beat him in the recent Manhattan H’Cap a G1 race- by English Channel, out of Indy Pick- Optimizer stems from a useful strand of Lady Pitt’s branch of ff 20-b - a good field will offer fans a fine spectacle and if I were to play an exactor I might include Twilight Eclipse, a fancy pants grandson of Dynaformer, from the ff of Boldnesian, granddad of Seattle Slew etc.- Lastly in this petit roundup is the prestigious 10 furlong G1 American Oaks being programmed at soon to be razed Hollywood Park- this is also a turf race and my choice is long shot Macha, a 85K purchase last year- J.
