Racing selections 071713 Wednesday Opening day at Del Mar Race courses and I will assume the parking lot and stands will be brimming with happy humanity glad that the powers of the universe have granted them the cash and wherewithal to party hearty at one of the more beautiful racing emporiums in these United States- In my last visit to Del Mar-I lost every race I bet on- & trudged around the throngs like some refugee from an old age home- “the heck with it” I announced to my famed poetess lady friend who had flown in from the suburbs of Milan to enjoy the races with your correspondent- she didn’t mind all the losing and mildly chastised me for having “learned nothing” in the decade since we last had a rendezvous- well maybe I had my mind on other things- but the year 2013 in the golden age of electricity -I will be enjoying the heat and humidity of Massachusetts- ice in my seltzer water and remote in other hand to mute the ads proliferating the racing channel- at peace placing my bets with the phantoms of my friendly betting service- but hopefully before the meeting is over, I can renew my vague acquaintances with the east and west coast spas- if only to gawk at the 2yo and enjoy the offspring of the newly online stallions- such information and my analysis of it form the heart of my handicapping “systems” the impressions left by the progeny of current stallions at the paddock stay with the “handicapper” for a long time- as for the card at Del Mar’s 2013 grand opening -I will happily offer some historical info of my selections along with name and the racing form program number- Race 1- is a brain-twister but I found a play in 10/1ML 6yo gelding #4 Go To The Pulpit-Del Mar recently claimed by savvy Mark Glatt- a son of Lucky Pulpit, he ran 3rd last outing- I really should know what kind of racing surface is being employed at 2013 Del Mar if its old fashioned dirt I’m happy but chances are it is a gumbo composed of old feathers, mattresses, discarded chewing chew old converse sneakers and jambalaya imported from Lafayette- whatever Go To The Pulpit is a 1-0 family charge and students of pedigree will be thrilled when they analyze the 5th dam in this critter- one Ro Dear who won 1 race in 24 tries- but she was out of a War relic matron and that is enough to make me hopeful that a win by Go To The Pulpit wilolo take care of all my Del Mar needs for 2013- Race 2- I’m concerned with 6/1 ML #7 Sinfully ( something I know a lot about) a Candy Ride 3yo colt the Turf mile should theoretically not faze him - as his dam sire Dr. Devious won the English Derby on the stuff- the double of Go To The Pulpit and Sinfully might insure a couple of days and evenings in Ticonderoga! Race 3- there are far options I would guess in this heat than #6 15/1 ML Leona Pegasus, but long shots are the cherry on top of the racing sundae and I love them madly- she is a 3yo filly boldly inbred to Mr. Prospector 2x5 (a play I’ve seen on a number of occasions sometimes to good use) and her 12th dam or some such is Thora one of the greatest racing mares of the 19th century! Race 4- a dart board toss is #6 3/1 ML Dreamcatcher which is the name of the local real estate company in the one light town I call home these last 2 decades- sired by potent Tapit- the 4yo colt returns to the racing wars from a pre Kentucky derby period layoff- top rider and trainer are amongst its connections and the odds seems fair enough in this unpredictable turf affair- the colts 4th dam was a half sister to Honest Pleasure and For The Moment two of the fastest horses in the 2nd half of the 20th century -for sure- Race 5- is a Cal-bred sprint for 2yo fillies! A unlikely place to sort out a winner but I’ll take a poke with #10! Cal gal by Tapit- why not the odds seem Ok 4/1 and she will emerge from the Doug O’Neill barns ready to joust I’d assume- her last drill was 5f in 1.01 and 3 and that seems just right for this 1st run at 5 dirt furlongs- (or whatever passes for dirt these days at del mar- by the sea-) the mishpoochar are a significant branch the famed Maggie BB 4-M clan in fact 4 of the fist 8 dams of Cal gal may have been G1 winners!! -cool- Race 6- is a division of the 1 mile Oceanside - a turf sweepstakes carrying a 100K purse - Garrett Gomez and Tom Proctor are among the connections of 8/1ML chance #3 Examen whose “granny” may be a half sister to Jamaica me Smile dam of Jamaica Bound a hard nosed stakes placed gelding by Boundary if this is slim evidence to hang a wager upon - the 3yo gelding is by world class Giants Causeway so a stakes victory would appear to be his birthright- right-?! Race 7- is a claming sprint so I’m supporting the unlikely #3 Guidopanzini- who has interesting pedigree if nothing else- Jack Carava a top claiming horse maven just haltered him away from his old barn and hopefully Mr. Carava has had time to fix what ailed this son of Derby surprise winner Giacomo- this may be the family of one of my all-time favorites- the hard hitting dynamic Delta Judge! so you go “Guido”- dig that- Race 8- I’m on the rail with Preacher’s Bluff a 2nd time runner who showed some early speed in a rich maiden race run over at Santa Anita in December 2012!! Yikes- but what the heck- this runner stems from the famed Cottage Cheese family- (16-C?)- sometimes the early speed last race/back off a long layoff! angle is a good one- Race 9-offers the 2nd division of the 2013 Oceanside Stakes a event which on its roster of winners has the likes of ultra swift Lightning Mandate who won the race with great aplomb in 1974- a beautiful long and lean speedster- the son of Mandate x Lightning Bam defeated stalwarts Kafe Bush & Space data when the Oceanside was run at a distance of 6f- a winner of the G1 San Antonio and placed in the G1 Big ‘Cap as well - Lightning Mandate was unfortunately a gelding as was John Henry and they would have been very welcome to have kept the flame of Princequillo male line alive and well in the western portion of America- anyways who do I like here- #5 wow 20/1 ML “fantasia” Show Some Magic- ( I guess I’m playing to take home the “grandstand” Wednesday)- this questionable stakes winner to be - won the rich Riley Allison Futurity Christmas eve 2012 in New Mexico!- and perhaps we will be looking at Christmas in July when this “ship” comes in!! Stemming from the family of high class Arkansas derby hero Twist The Axe- these is hope that we will celebrate a shocking score by Show Some Magic- Race 10- maiden claimers are the night cap at beautiful Del Mar and my choice in this parade will be #12 Spring Up, a colt out of the barn of Cody Autrey as I recollect had some tough luck at del mar last season and I’m sure 2013 will bring a change of fortune for him and his entries- as for Spring Up he showed some speed in a rich maiden specials out in Arkansas and hopefully he has been renewed in health and spirit having been resting etc. since April- There you have it a sweep of the opening Del Mar race card- good luck to the kind readers of this posting- with your selections for the exciting Del mar and Saratoga racing in 2013- the NY spa opens Friday- the 19th- Assiniboia 1-5 2-2 3-2 4-1 5-3 6-6 7-2 8-3 Beulah 1-2 2-4 3-2 4-3 5-2 6-5 7-2 8-3 Del Mar 1-4 2-7 3-6 4-6 5-10 6-3 7-3 8-1 9-5 10-12 Delaware 1-5 2-6 3-1e 4-1 5-5 6-1e 7-1 8-1 9-2 Evangeline 1-8 2-3 3-7 4-2 5-8 6-6 7-4 8-2 9-2 Tulsa - fair meadows 1-4 2-5 3-8 4--- 5-3 6-6 7-3 8-8 9-5 10-5 11-6 12-5 Indiana 1-4 2-3 3-2 4-1 5-4 6-1e 7-6 8-2e 9-2 10-10 Les Bois 1-1- 2-3 3-5 4-2 5-5 6-2 7-3 8-3 9-2 Northlands 1-2 2-1 3-8 4-1 5-1 6-4 7-2 8-2 Penn 1-6 2-1 3-2 4-3 5-1 6-6 7-9 8-7 9-1 Presque isle 1-7 2-8 3-4 4-1 5-5 6-5 7-1 8-6 Sacramento-
