One answer to that eternal “fraga”- is, “looking into the miniscule hieroglyphics of the racing form”- where the want to be “handicapper” should make an intelligent “pick” factoring & considering - pace, condition, distance, trainer, track condition, owner, jockey, post position, workouts, equipment, the others in the race- earnings, pedigree, and other sundry information!! Then the governments sticks their hands into the till- that is after you pay admission, parking, or for your online betting service, food, pen and racing program- a pencil, beer, and extra anti heart burn medicine, in case your first 8 picks go belly up! - and if you hit an exotic then the “taxman” comes in for another 18% on top of the 17% - oh boy !! Yeah, yeah, yeah- I wonder if this sort of stuff bothers the Japanese fans, who appear to show up at their tracks like Americans used to flock to their racetracks ( about a 1000 years ago) - and that was in the bad old days of nine races and one double- (legally) of course bookies have always been around- I remember my mom - (bless her memory) she used to see me walk out into freezing cold, right into the sites of Brooklyn midnight muggers - hail, snow or thunderstorm, to get my copy of the “form” (plus a pack of smokes and something to drink and maybe a burger from George the Greeks under the tracks of the Coney Island “D” train-) Mom -would yell at me “Bookie!
