Racism and Hierarchical mindset. Part 1: Economy and Power. (cc: Dr Hariyati Shahrima Abdul Majid, part 2 and maybe part 3 will write somewhere next week) (*This is not academic writing, just my views based on my observation and readings) Typically, the Asian culture are communal as opposed to Westerns individualistic culture. Asian cultures are also highly hierarchical, either its formal or informal. Informal hierarchies are like seniority-juniority in school and university or just in the society. Japanese uses ending honorifics such as San/Kun/Chan, Korean uses informal Hyung/Unni, and Malaysian, of course, abang/kakak/mak cik. This informal hierarchies also expands onto social stature, such as economic standing and public figures. Which expands to good looks, I have read an article long ago, fair skin people are seen as more beautiful because in China, dark skinned people are the working class, who works the land, and light skin people are usually the rich who never go out from their house. Thus its fair to say, fair skin = perceived economic standing, and that defines what is beauty. At least in the more Eastern part of the world. Formal hierarchies then decides only one group of people will be the workers and another group the rich employers. Because of course, the rich doesnt want their child to be workers and ensures their future in riches by pressing their workers more. Thus systematically makes one race or people the workers and one race of people the boss, the ruling elites and the royalty. Thus again, this can be seen, from an economic perspective, the start of in-group out-group, the working class and the elite class.
